Capture Protected Apps

Certain applications employ advanced Windows security features—specifically Window Display Affinity (WDA)—to block standard capture tools from seeing their content. When you try to screenshot these apps, the result is usually a solid black image or an empty window. Hepi includes a specialized engine designed to safely bypass these restrictions.

Info
This is a Pro+ feature designed for users who need AI assistance within highly secure environments where standard capture methods are intentionally blocked by the OS.

When is WDA Bypass Needed?

You will need this feature if you encounter “black screens” when attempting to capture specific high-security applications, such as:

  • Secure Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Financial platforms or protected document viewers.
  • Dedicated exam browsers that use WDA to prevent external monitoring.

How it Works

Hepi’s WDA Bypass engine operates by monitoring the display state of targeted windows. When a protected application is detected, Hepi uses an advanced rendering bypass to “see” the pixels before the OS blacks them out for standard screen-grabbing tools.

Setup Instructions

  1. Enable in Settings: Navigate to Settings > Privacy and toggle the Screenshot Protected Apps (WDA Bypass) option.
  2. Monitor Selection: In most cases, Hepi will automatically detect protected windows. Some environments may require you to explicitly enable the bypass monitor from the Hepi dashboard.
  3. Verification: Perform a test capture screenshot on the target application. If the capture is successful and shows the app’s content instead of a black box, the bypass is active.

Technical Considerations

  • Resource Usage: This engine is more intensive than standard capture. It is recommended to only enable it when interacting with protected applications.
  • Hardware Variation: Success can depend on your specific Windows version, graphics drivers, and whether the application uses additional hardware-level protections (like HDCP).
  • Security Software: Because this is a powerful system-level capability, ensure Hepi is whitelisted in your antivirus to avoid the bypass monitor being blocked.
