Access SEB isolated desktop

What is SEB isolated desktop?

By default, Safe Exam Browser locks users into a separate desktop environment to prevent access to other applications. This separates the exam from files and running apps on your default desktop.

How Hepi bridges the gap

Hepi uses the Unlock SEB desktop feature, designed for SEB’s isolated environment. It automatically detects the SEB desktop and intervenes to disable commands that block desktop switching or viewing other windows.

What this feature enables

  • Automatic detection: Hepi recognizes when SEB creates a new desktop.
  • Hepi Sidekick: Launches a dedicated Hepi interface inside the isolated SEB desktop.
  • Desktop switching: Allows you to use Ctrl+Shift+D to switch freely between the exam environment and your default desktop.
  • Keep running: Works in tandem with Prevent SEB From Closing Other Apps to ensure Hepi isn’t terminated by SEB’s monitors.

Usage flow

  1. Verify plan: Make sure you are using the Pro plan or higher and running Hepi as administrator.
  2. Enable unlock: Turn on Unlock SEB desktop in Hepi settings.
  3. Launch SEB: Start your exam. Hepi will wait for the SEB desktop to finish initializing.
  4. Interact: Once detected, Hepi Sidekick will appear on the exam screen. You can then use the desktop switch shortcut if needed (requires Premium).

Safety and reliability

  • Guardian process: Hepi runs a secondary “guardian” process. If Hepi crashes, this process automatically returns you to your default desktop so you never get stuck in the SEB environment.
  • Non-destructive: Hepi does not modify SEB’s files or your system. All interventions happen in memory and disappear once the session ends.
Tip
Because every SEB configuration is different, you should test this setup with a practice exam. Make sure the features work correctly before entering an important exam.
